Focus

There are so many ways to put your comedy out there. Of course there are actual shows. The best way to connect with an audience is in the same room, feeling the same vibes. Then there’s social media. A great way to connect with people all over the world. A great way to use different forms of media and content (videos, songs, mash-ups, graphics, cartoons) to get your comedy out there. Then there’s blogs, like this one. Podcasts, interviews, news articles, and of course good ole’ face-to-face conversations. Then there’s all the behind the scenes stuff - headshots, promo, editing, meeting with venues/producers, scheduling, etc.

How do you know where to focus your attention? If you spend all your time writing jokes, you will miss out on meeting new fans, fellow comics, bookers, agents, and media because you aren’t out there performing. If you spend all your time performing, you will burn through your material and people may get tired of seeing the same jokes over and over. You may even get tired of telling them. If you spend all your time on social media then you miss out on hitting stages. So how do you do it?

I don’t have the answer. Sorry to build you up just to leave you with a cliffhanger. What I do is try to set goals for myself each day and each week. Some weeks inspiration isn’t striking me for new material, so I focus on social media or hitting as many stages as I can. Some weeks I cannot stop the flow of ideas so I focus on writing as much as possible. There is no right or wrong answer. It is whatever works for you. Be mindful of all the pieces that go into this and don’t lose sight of why you are doing it all in the first place.
